A clever and impressive Halloween craft that will delight children and grown-ups alike — and one that uses materials we already have at home!
Coffee filters are transformed into spooky pumpkins with a little orange colour, a splash of water and a black marker. The result will amaze you!
What You'll Need
- Coffee filters
- Orange markers or diluted watercolour/tempera paint
- Black marker
- Spray bottle with water or a wet paintbrush
- Protective surface covering (newspaper/plastic sheet)
- Ribbon or string (optional, for garland)
- Pegs (optional, for drying)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 — Colour the filter Place the coffee filter on the protective surface and colour it loosely with an orange marker — lines, dots, scribbles all work perfectly! No precision needed — this craft loves freedom!
Step 2 — Add the water Spray lightly with water or brush over with a wet paintbrush. You'll see the orange spread evenly and create beautiful blended shades — like magic!
Step 3 — Leave to dry Leave the filters to dry — you can hang them with pegs for a quicker result.
Step 4 — Draw the pumpkin face! Using the black marker, draw eyes, a nose and a mouth just like the spooky carvings on Halloween pumpkins — triangle eyes, jagged teeth and a frightening expression!
Step 5 — Make the garland or light them up! Thread ribbon through the top to create a wonderful pumpkin face garland — or place a small artificial tealight underneath and light them up in the evening. The effect will be truly spectacular!
Educational Benefits
Exploring materials and scientific curiosity: Watching how water travels through the filter and spreads the colour is a small scientific wonder — an introduction to the concepts of absorption and diffusion in the most enjoyable way!
Creative expression: There is no wrong way to colour a coffee filter — every result is unique and beautiful. This builds confidence and encourages free expression.
Fine motor skills: Colouring, spraying and drawing with a marker exercise the small muscles of the hands — excellent preparation for writing.
Recycling and environmental awareness: Coffee filters are transformed into works of art! Children learn from an early age to see creative possibilities in everyday materials.
Imagination and storytelling: Every pumpkin face has its own expression — spooky, funny or peculiar! A wonderful starting point for imaginative play and creative thinking.
