The colourful caterpillar is a very cheerful and easy educational craft, primarily for learning colours, practising scissor skills, and exploring the circle shape. Simple, quick, and loved by young children — and at the end they have a wonderful decoration they'll want to put up everywhere!
We have prepared for you an adorable caterpillar and circles in all the basic colours. Print the materials and help your little one cut out the colourful circles and glue them onto white or coloured card in whatever order they choose.
What You'll Need
- Printed template (below) — caterpillar and coloured circles
- Scissors (children's, with rounded tips)
- Glue
- White or coloured card
How to Play
Step 1 — Print the template Download and print the free template. You'll also find a black and white version in case your little one wants to use their own imagination for the colours!
Step 2 — Cut out the circles Help the child cut out the colourful circles following the outlines. Excellent practice for using scissors and recognising the circular shape!
Step 3 — Glue the caterpillar together Glue the circles onto the card in whatever order the child chooses — there is no wrong order! Glue the caterpillar's head at the front.
Step 4 — Talk about colours! While making the craft, chat about colours and where we find them around us. For example:
- blue in the sea, the sky, or a towel
- red in a tomato or a toy
- yellow in a flower or a t-shirt
- green in the trees or a cushion
