This activity is perfect for our youngest little artists — simple, colourful, and with a result that will impress children and grown-ups alike!
With a few pots of tempera paint and a toilet paper roll, your little one creates a stunning Christmas tree from colourful stamps — a true work of art that deserves to be displayed!
What You'll Need
- Tempera paints in various colours
- Toilet paper roll
- A4 or A3 coloured card stock
- A brown marker for the tree trunk (optional)
- A little star — you'll find plenty in other crafts on our website (optional)
- Scissors (optional)
- Glue (optional)
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1 — Prepare the space Spread the tempera paints into small plates or flat surfaces and let your little one choose the colours they'd like. While they're choosing, draw a triangle in pencil on the paper — this will be the guide for the Christmas tree!
Step 2 — Stamp away! Give your little one a toilet paper roll and encourage them to dip the base into the paint and press it onto the paper inside the triangle. They can repeat this movement as many times as they like — with a different colour each time!
Step 3 — Add the finishing touches If you wish, add a yellow star at the top and a brown trunk drawn with a marker.
Step 4 — Display it! Your little one's masterpiece is ready to be displayed — on the wall, in the window or even as a festive decoration for your home!
Happy crafting and happy holidays!
Educational Benefits
Sensory development: Dipping the roll into the paint and experiencing different textures and colours provides a rich sensory experience — especially important for very young children.
Fine motor skills: The dipping and stamping motion exercises hand control and visual-motor coordination — an excellent first step towards writing.
Creative expression and independence: The freedom to choose colours and stamp at their own pace gives the child the feeling of creating something entirely their own — and the result is always unique!
Shape recognition: The triangle as the base of the tree and the circles of the stamps introduce children to geometric shapes in the most natural way.
Confidence: A piece of artwork displayed at home fills a child with pride — and that feeling is invaluable for building self-esteem.
