Playing a memory based matching game is one of the best first games to teach a young child.

With a deck of matching pairs of cards and just a few simple game rules you are set to help your child develop observational skills, visual discrimination, memory and concentration – to name just a few of the benefits of this great, first game.

Visual discrimination is the ability to see differences and similarities, even subtle ones, between physical objects and images included on printed materials. These differences and likenesses may be in size, shape, form, colour or position.

Depending upon your choice of cards, memory matching games can also reinforce learning about a range of concepts such as color recognition, letter names or sounds, counting, number recognition, alongside improved vocabulary and even reading skills.

We suggest starting play with children from the age of 3 years.

Christmas matching cards are a fun and educational activity for children during the holiday season. With vibrant colours and festive illustrations (Santa, snowmen, gifts, ornaments, trees and reindeer), these cards help kids practise memory, attention, visual discrimination and fine-motor skills.

Simply print the cards, cut them out and let children find the matching pairs! Perfect for home use, classroom learning or creative Christmas workshops.

For slightly older children, these cards can also be used as memory-game cards. Place the cards face down in rows of 3 or 4 and try to find the matching pairs by turning them over one at a time. Each player is allowed one attempt per turn. Every incorrect attempt gives the opportunity to memorize the position of the cards and helps in solving the game. When two identical cards are found, they are removed from play and the game continues with the remaining cards.

For best results, print 2 copies on thick cardstock (or even better, laminate the cards).
